European Commissioner Michael McGrath visits Singapore

With the focus of the visit on strengthening bilateral cooperation between the EU and Singapore in the areas of digital, data and consumer protection, Commissioner McGrath met Singapore's Minister for Digital Development and Information, Josephine Teo.

Commissioner McGrath met the Acting Commissioner of the Personal Data Protection Commission of Singapore, Denise Wong. Both sides looked forward to continuing their close cooperation which can contribute to further strengthening the partnership between the EU and Singapore, in line with other bilateral initiatives such as the recently negotiated EU-Singapore Digital Trade Agreement and the EU-Singapore Digital Partnership. Other meetings were with the Competition and Consumer Commission of Singapore (CCCS), European and Singaporean businesses, civil society organisations. Commissioner McGrath addressed Heads of Mission of EU Member States in a meeting chaired by EU Ambassador to Singapore Iwona Piórko.
The Commissioner exchanged views on opportunities and challenges presented by the digital transformation, such as the protection of consumers and children online, e-commerce, trusted data flows, and the digitalisation of justice systems.
Commissioner McGrath delivered a speech at the Singapore Management University’s Centre for Digital Law, focusing on how the EU and Singapore can overcome common challenges and harness shared opportunities to empower businesses and consumers in the digital age.
