Today in Singapore, the High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, co-chaired the annual ASEAN-EU ministerial meeting and held a number of bilateral meetings in the margins. She also spoke to students about the European Union as a global actor at the Nanyang Technological University.
High Representative Mogherini met with Prime Minister Lee Hsien Loong and Foreign Minister Vivian Balakrishnan of Singapore and discussed bilateral cooperation between the EU and Singapore, including economic relations and ways to increase engagement in areas such as non-traditional security and climate change. Both sides looked forward the upcoming signing of the bilateral Free Trade Agreement and Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.
The importance for regional and global security of the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action (JCPOA) – the Iran nuclear deal - was at the forefront of several meetings, including with Chinese State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi, Foreign Minister of Japan, Tarō Kōno, and Foreign Minister of Iran, Javad Zarif. In the conversation with Minister Zarif the High Representative reiterated the EU's continued commitment to the JCPOA and updated the Minister on the EU's ongoing work and measures to preserve the deal.
The situation on the Korean Peninsula and the need to continue to apply strong pressure through sanctions combined with support for the diplomatic processes was discussed with the Foreign Minister of Japan Tarō Kōno and Chinese State Councillor and Minister of Foreign Affairs, Wang Yi. With the former Federica Mogherini also looked back at the recent EU-Japan Summit, at which two landmark agreements were signed (Economic Partnership Agreement and the Strategic Partnership Agreement), while with the latter she touched upon the recent EU-China Summit, High-level Strategic Dialogue and Human Rights Dialogue.
High Representative Mogherini met for the first time with the new Minister of Foreign Affairs of Malaysia Saifuddin Abdullah following the 9 May parliamentary elections and looked forward to developing a fruitful relationship with the new government.
Federica Mogherini also met with the Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister of Vietnam, Pham Binh Minh. They discussed bilateral relations, including the human rights situation in the country and fisheries, as well as regional issues.
The High representative also met with the Foreign Minister of Turkey, Mevlüt Çavuşoğlu to look at the state of play of EU-Turkey relations and discuss topical foreign policy issues such as the situation in Syria.
