Welcome to the website of the European Union Delegation to Singapore.
I begin my term as the EU Ambassador to Singapore at a historically significant time: in 2017, the EU has turned 60 and ASEAN 50; and the EU and ASEAN mark 40 years of ties. In addition, Singapore's importance as a regional partner will be further emphasized in the coming years by its simultaneous position as ASEAN chair in 2018 and its three-year role as ASEAN's coordinator for EU relations.
The EU and Singapore enjoy broad based and long-standing relations. On the economic side, within ASEAN, Singapore is by far the EU's largest commercial partner, accounting for almost one-third of EU-ASEAN trade in goods and services, and roughly two-thirds of investments between the two regions. Over 11,000 EU companies have a presence in Singapore and use it as a hub to serve the whole Pacific Rim.
Our bilateral ties with Singapore continue to grow stronger in areas such as transport, information and communication technologies, financial services and research and innovation enabling the EU to confirm its position as Singapore's most important trading partner in goods and service combined and Singapore's foremost investor.
We are aiming at a swift ratification of the EU-Singapore Free Trade Agreement, initialed in 2014, to ensure early implementation with a view to further increasing market access opportunities for Singaporean and EU business.
We are also broadening and deepening other areas of our relations and will work towards finalizing a Partnership and Cooperation Agreement between the EU and Singapore. Most recently, our office has expanded to host the regional headquarters of the European Aviation Safety Agency, reinforcing our cooperation with Singapore and ASEAN in civil aviation. We have also strengthened collaboration in key areas of global concern, including cyber-security and counter-terrorism with the secondment of a Europol official to Interpol, as well as climate change and environment.
Our cultural engagement is as active as ever, with the popular EU Film Festival moving into its 28th edition next year and our popular higher education fair, Study in Europe, returning for the 11th year on September 30 2017.
I look forward to continuing, in the coming years, the long established trajectory of deep ties between the EU and Singapore and working towards further widening the scope of our relations.
Our website offers information and news on EU-Singapore relations, as well as the EU projects and activities. It also covers a wide range of EU policies in greater depth. I hope you will find it useful.
