The visit of the striking Italian navy frigate 'ITS Carabiniere' on 16 March was the setting for the main celebration event marking the 60th Anniversary of The Rome Treaty in Singapore.

Over 200 invited guests joined Singapore's Senior Minister of State Mrs Josephine Teo, Italian Ambassador Crudele, EU Ambassador Pulch and Commander Pagnotta to a festive gala.

Being on board the 'European Multi-Mission Frigate' was "quite symbolic," HoD Pulch said in his speech (available below). "The European Union was born to end the cycle of wars that ravaged our continent," and removing trade and other barriers "paved the way for a democratic, prosperous and united Europe".

It was a night to reflect on the past and look towards the future. A carefully curated exhibition on the theme of 'An ever closer Union' offered an insightful walk through European history and the challenges ahead. Personal touches including a 'birthday cake' that was baked on board and a musical performance made it a night to remember for all.

French President Hollande will give a speech on Europe on 27 March when he will visit Singapore, coming straight from the official anniversary celebration in Rome.
