The European Union announced the launch of the “African Research Initiative for Scientific Excellence” (ARISE) Pilot Programme with a contribution of €25 million from the PANAF Programme on 8th December 2020. The Call for applications was published on 18th June 2021 with a deadline for submission of 30th July 2021.

The programme will be implemented by the African Academy of Sciences (Nairobi, Kenya), a non-aligned, non-political, not-for-profit pan African organisation, with the strategic direction of the European Union and the African Union.

The European Commission’s DG International Partnerships, INTPA (Unit A2, Regional and Multi-Country programmes for Africa) is responsible for managing the programme in collaboration with DG INTPA’s Unit F5 (Science, Technology, Innovation and Digitalisation), DG for Research and innovation (RTD) and the African Union Commission (AUC).

The objective of ARISE is to strengthen Africa’s science and innovation base by enabling young early-career African scientists to deliver cutting-edge research across Africa. The ARISE-PP grants are open to applications from all fields of research. But Proposals should take into account the priorities of the AU-EU High Level Policy Dialogue on Science Technology and Innovation (Public Health, Green Transition, Innovation and Technology, Capacities for science).

The recently published Call for Applications is open to all African countries in a continent-wide competition.

It targets researchers with 2 to 7 years experience after obtaining their PhD, hosted in African higher education or research institutions. In order to ensure geographical balance, 40 Proposals (1 per country) will be selected on the basis of scientific excellence.

2 Selected researchers will be granted up to EUR 500 000 over a period of up to 5 years to develop their own research projects and independent research teams.

A Scientific Advisory Committee, composed of eminent African and European scientists, guarantees the scientific independence and aptness of the initiative.
