The Delegation of the European Union to Sierra Leone has awarded a new project to the Freetown City Council. The 24 months project of approx. 3.2 billion Leones will be used to carry out waste collection services to hard-to-reach and lower income households and small commercial businesses in Freetown. The project will therefore contribute to the goal of ensuring that 60% of Freetown’s solid waste are safely collected, managed and disposed of by 2022.
The launch should also be seen in the context of a wider partnership between the EU and Sierra Leonean Government to encourage and support national civil society and local authorities to jointly strengthen local service delivery and development. Other projects are already ongoing or being launched in Kambia, Bombali, Kenema, Pujehun Port Loko and Bo.
