CELEBRATING EUROPE DAY 2025 IN SIERRA LEONE – A NIGHT OF UNITY, DIALOGUE, AND MUSIC

On May 9th, the EU Delegation to Sierra Leone hosted a vibrant Europe Day reception at the Radisson Blu Hotel in Freetown, marking the 75th anniversary of the Schuman Declaration, the moment that laid the foundation for what is now the European Union.

The event brought together an impressive mix of guests, from government officials and diplomats to business leaders, development partners, and civil society representatives. Among the distinguished attendees the EU was honoured by the presence of the First Lady of Sierra Leone and President of the Organisation of African First Ladies, Dr. Fatima Maada Bio, and Minister of Finance, Hon. Sheku F. Bangura, who served as Guest of Honour.

In his welcome address, Ambassador Jacek Jankowski reminded guests of the enduring importance of Europe Day: “It was on this day, in 1950, that Robert Schuman outlined a vision of cooperation that transformed a war-torn continent into a Union of peace, prosperity, and partnership.”

He reflected on the journey of the EU, from six founding members to a community of 27 countries committed to integration, democracy, and shared values. The Ambassador also highlighted the EU’s 2012 Nobel Peace Prize as recognition of these efforts and reaffirmed the EU’s position on today’s global conflicts, including its firm condemnation of Russia’s aggression in Ukraine and concern over the humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

The EU’s strong partnership with Sierra Leone was front and center. Ambassador Jankowski acknowledged the country’s ongoing strides in peacebuilding, religious tolerance, and political stability following the 2023 elections. He emphasized that Sierra Leone is seen as a trusted partner, referencing a recent national survey where the EU, under the “Team Europe” banner, was ranked the most supportive and influential international actor in the country.

He also outlined five key priorities for EU–Sierra Leone cooperation in 2025:

  • Democratic Space & Political Dialogue – Supporting inclusive reforms and democratic processes

  • Economic Governance & Investment Climate – Promoting accountability and business opportunities

  • Rule of Law & Human Rights – Strengthening legal institutions, especially for women and girls

  • Youth Employment & Inclusion – Creating jobs and ensuring equity

  • Regional Security & Global Cooperation – Working together on security and diplomacy

Representing the Government of Sierra Leone, Finance Minister Sheku Bangura called Europe Day as “a beacon of peace and cooperation” and thanked the EU for its steadfast support for Sierra Leone’s development journey. He spotlighted the alignment of EU cooperation with the government’s “Big Five Game Changers” agenda, especially in food security and youth empowerment.

Dr. Fatima Maada Bio also delivered a heartfelt message, calling the EU a model of what nations can achieve through unity and dialogue. She urged stronger international partnerships to tackle challenges like climate change and inequality, and reminded the audience:

“Europe Day is more than a celebration, it’s a call to action.”

The evening ended on a high note with a powerful performance by the Balanta Academy of Music and Arts, capturing the spirit of cultural exchange and celebration that defines Europe Day.

As guests mingled and music filled the air, one message stood out clearly: the EU and Sierra Leone are moving forward, together, toward a future built on peace, partnership, and shared progress.
