EU in Sierra Leone will celebrate Climate Diplomacy Weeks from 24 September to 6 October. This year's theme focusses on youth and their engagement in climate action in recognition of youth all over the world being increasingly vocal about climate change and asking governments, companies and all of us to take action.

In this context, the EU Delegation in collaboration with Sierra Leone School Green Club (SLSGC) and Society for Climate Change Communication – SL (S4CCC), today has launched an arts competition in 10 selected schools of Freetown on the theme of climate change: what causes it, what are the negative consequences especially in Sierra Leone and what the urgent solutions are. Collective arts works will be made by students aged 13 to 18 from 10 designated schools and students will be provided with training on the project by SLSGC and S4CCC.

Topics that have been identified for the competition are: global warming; deforestation; land degradation, sand and artisanal mining; pollution of air, water and soil; waste management including reduction of plastics; protection of marine/coastal areas; sustainable use of land, ocean and water resources, sustainable fisheries; good practices in industry, energy (clean, renewable energies), water, transport etc.

The artworks will be presented by the students at an EU Youth Event to take place at the British Council on 4 October 2019 where the 3 best schools will be announced and awarded a prize. The award ceremony event will also be an opportunity for the students to attend an interactive debate on climate change, to learn about relevant EU projects and collect documentation in order to continue the debate in school after the award ceremony.
