EU marks World Oceans Day in Sierra Leone with yet another succesful beach clean event
In collaboration with Shout Climate Change Sierra Leone and the National Tourist Board, EU and British High Commission staff in Freetown on Saturday 8 June were joined by an enthusiastic crowd of youth volunteers, representatives from the international community, the Ministries of Tourism, Fisheries and Social Welfare and the Mayor of Freetown for a morning cleaning session of the Lumley, Aberdeen and Levuma beaches, collecting more than 200 bags of litter.
Addressing all participants as "friends of the beach, friends of the ocean and friends of of the environment", EU Ambassador Tom Vens underlined the importance of a long term strategy to beat beach and marine pollution.
On the eve of the event, EU, British High Commission and National Tourist Board representatives were invited to participate in a talkshow on Star TV Sierra Leone on the theme of "World Oceans Day in Sierra Leone".
