HR/VP Borrell to discuss European and international security at the Munich Security Conference

14.02.2020

"Westlessness’" is the term chosen by the report ahead of this year’s Munich Security Conference to describe "a feeling of uneasiness and restlessness in the face of increasing uncertainty about the enduring purpose of the West". High Representative/Vice President Borrell will participate in the Munich Security Conference this weekend to discuss European and international security and to present his vision for Europe as a true global security player.

"Is the world becoming less Western? Is the West itself becoming less Western, too? What does it mean for the world if the West leaves the stage to others? What could a joint Western strategy for an era of great power competition look like?" These are some of the questions raised by the Munich Security Report 2020, the yearly report that acts as a conversation starter for the Munich Security Conference.

High Representative / Vice-President Borrell will participate in this year’s Munich Security Conference along with Executive Vice-President Vestager and Vice-Presidents Šefčovič, Jourová, Schinas and Commissioners Hahn, Breton, Simson and Sinkevičius. The conference is a leading forum for debating international security policy. It is a yearly event where security experts, diplomats and military leaders gather to address the world's most pressing security concerns. The 56th edition will take place this weekend, from 14 to 16 February.

On Friday, High Representative Borrell will participate in a roundtable with heads of state or government of Western Balkan partners. On Saturday, he will participate in the informal European ministerial meeting on the D-ISIS Coalition and Iraq. On Sunday, the HR/VP will be a key contributor to the panel discussion on ‘A Europe that projects' and attend the first ministerial-level meeting follow-up to the Berlin Conference on Libya. He will further hold a number of bilateral meetings, including with the Prime Minister of Kuwait, the Foreign Ministers of Russia, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Iraq and the Minister of Defence of Japan.
