EU Statement on the occasion of the second special session of the IAEA General Conference

Vienna, 2 December 2019

Approval of the Appointment of the Director General

Madam President,

  1. I have the honour to speak on behalf of the European Union and its Member States. The following countries align themselves with this statement: Turkey§, the Republic of North Macedonia*, Montenegro*, Iceland+, Serbia*, Albania*, Bosnia and Herzegovina*, Liechtenstein+, Norway+, Ukraine, the Republic of Moldova, Armenia, Georgia and San Marino.

Madam President,

  1. We warmly congratulate Ambassador Rafael Grossi on his appointment as Director General of the IAEA by the General Conference after the Board appointed him by acclamation on 30 October 2019. We welcome Ambassador Grossi, as Director General Amano's successor, becoming the first Latin American to take the top job at the IAEA.

  1. We very much look forward to working with him and wish him all the success in his endeavour to lead the Agency in the coming years. Ambassador Grossi can be assured of our steadfast support.

  1. Ambassador Grossi has extensive experience in the field of non-proliferation and his designation to preside at the NPT 2020 Review Conference was testament to this. Furthermore, his experience as the Argentinian Ambassador to the IAEA and previous work at the Agency will undoubtedly enable him to succeed as Director General.

  1. We take this opportunity to reaffirm our strong commitment to the important work of the IAEA across the spectrum of its mandate. We look forward to deepening our co-operation with the IAEA even further under the leadership of the new Director General.

  1. The EU and its Member States have been pleased to hear Ambassador Grossi's strong commitment to equal opportunities for women at the IAEA as well as to creating conditions for further improving effectiveness and efficiency in the work of the Agency. We look forward to the implementation of these commitments.

  1. Finally, we once again applaud the Chair of the Board, Ambassador Kumlin Granit and her team, for the excellent stewardship in guiding the Board through a complex process in a quick and transparent manner.

Thank you, Madam President.
