International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and 16 Days of Activism

25.11.2021

25th of November is the International Day for the Elimination of Violence against Women. Nearly 1 in 3 women have been abused in their lifetime. In times of crises, the numbers rise, as seen during the COVID-19 pandemic and recent humanitarian crises, conflicts and climate disasters. It is therefore more important than ever to raise awareness of the issue!

To kick off the 16 Days of Activism against Gender-Based Violence - the annual international campaign that runs until 10 December, International Human Rights Day, over 100 representatives from 70 different organizations came together to #OrangeGeneva. At the Palais des Nations we spelled out a big human NO sending a powerful message of strong commitment of International Geneva to end violence against women.

We also co-sponsored the special discussion on “Fighting Gender-Based Violence” organized by UN Women, UNFPA Geneva and the Permanent Missions of Israel, Argentina and Spain. During the discussion, we heard from Lili Ben-Ami, who founded the Michal Sela Forum after her sister, Michal Sela, was brutally murdered by her husband in 2019. She presented how we can save lives and prevent Gender-Based Violence, including through innovative digital tools!

To spread the word on the campaign and the 16 Days of Action, we kicked off another joint initiative with UN Women: Keep a look out over Geneva for 5 touring activism bikes!

Finally, we are looking forward to participate with an EU Team at the Course de l’Escalade in Geneva on 4th December. Look out for the team in orange, promoting action to end violence against women and girls.
