About us - structure and organisation

EU Delegations represent the European Union around the world. The role of the EU Delegation to Rwanda is to support the development of relations between Rwanda and the EU.

In this context, the role of the EU Delegation to Rwanda is to

  • Represent the European Union in Rwanda.
  • Ensure the follow-up of bilateral relations in the areas of political, economic, trade and external assistance cooperation (financial and technical);
  • Follow-up on EU policies in all sectors
  • Promote and defend the values and interests of the EU
  • Maintain and increase the visibility, awareness and understanding of the EU
  • Supervise long-term programming of aid and the management of programmes and projects within the framework of EU external aid management
  • Introduce Rwanda to European citizens

The presence of the European Commission in Rwanda started in the mid-1960s and was formalised in 1991 with the signature of an “accord de siège” with the Rwandan Government.

Welcome to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to Rwanda!

When I started my mission to the Republic of Rwanda in January 2018, I pledged continued support to Rwanda as one of the important partners of the European Union and one of the key actors of the African continent. My approach will be based on constructive dialogue and framed within the broader strategic partnership established between the EU and the African continent in 2007 which moved the relationship of both continents from a traditional development policy to a cooperation as equal partners. The EU and the African continent have shared global responsibilities in particular in the framework of the implementation of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development.

Against this background, the role of the EU Delegation will even be more important as Rwanda is becoming today an example of development in the continent and has recently taken a continental leadership with the African Union presidency.

Our relationship with Rwanda will remain based – as with all of our partners – on a set of common principles governing democracy, human rights, rule of law and fundamental freedoms. Our interaction will also be based on shared values and mutual respect, and on the ownership of Rwandans for the destiny or their country and the development of their society. We – the Europeans – will continue to support.

Through this website as well as via our social media platforms and our public diplomacy outreach through media or specific activities, we have the ambition to show concrete results of the cooperation and present the outcomes of the bilateral relations in the areas of political, economic, infrastructure, trade and external assistance cooperation (financial and technical).

I look forward to visiting this beautiful country and explore its traditions and cultural heritage.
