Statement by the Spokesperson on the sentencing of Alexey Navalny and his brother Oleg Navalny

The guilty verdict delivered today, Tuesday 30 December, by the Zamoskvoretsky Court against Alexey Navalny and his brother Oleg Navalny appears to be politically motivated.

The charges against them have not been substantiated during the trial. With the exception of a few selected representatives of the media, no public and international observers were allowed into the court building for the reading of the verdict.

The latest decision by the Russian Ministry of Justice on 25 December to forcibly include the Sakharov centre as well as two other regional NGOs in the so called "Foreign Agents Registry" confirms continued pressure on Russian civil society and human rights organisations. We extend our condolences to the families of the victims. Those responsible for serious crimes in Chechnya, whether acts of terrorism or human rights violations, should be brought to justice.

The Russian Federation’s signature today of a so-called “Treaty on Alliance and Strategic Partnership” with Georgia's breakaway region of Abkhazia is detrimental to ongoing efforts to stabilise the security situation in the region.

Just like earlier agreements signed between the Russian Federation and Abkhazia, this violates Georgia’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, contradicts principles of international law and the international commitments of the Russian Federation, including the 12 August 2008 Agreement and its Implementing Measures of 8 September 2008.
