Champions - EUFF 2019 cinema European Union Film opening

The EUFF2019 will open with ‘Champions’ (Spain 2018), a light-hearted film by Javier Fesser that topped the Spanish box office and won 11 nominations in the Spanish Goya Awards. The film tells the story of basketball coach Marco, who has problems with almost everything in his life. Marco is sentenced to community service and has to coach a special basketball team made up of intellectually disabled people. To his surprise, he will be the one who learns the most from their lust for life and their understanding of what is really important.

The opening ceremony will be held on 21 February with a free screening of ‘Champions’, a performance by The Hong Kong Polytechnic University Orchestra and a reception.

For ticket reservations, please email DELEGATION-HONG-KONG-EVENTS@eeas.europa.eu.

Michael Inside European Union Film Festival 2019 Closing film Ireland
The festival will close with ‘Michael Inside’ (Ireland 2017). Michael’s life is derailed when he is caught holding a bag of drugs for a friend and sentenced to three months in prison. Director Frank Berry workshopped the film with former prisoners from the Irish Prison Service's Pathways Programme, creating a harrowing picture of young people caught up, with bleak inevitability, in a cycle of crime and incarceration. The film won Best Film and Best Screenplay at the Irish Film and Television Awards (IFTAs).

On 10 March, Director Frank Berry will attend a Q&A with the audience after the screening.

The EUFF will include a series of extra screenings and activities which include 2 free retrospective screenings of European modern classics hosted together with The Hong Kong Polytechnic University: ‘The Lives of Others’ (Germany 2006) and ‘Amelie’ (France 2001). To celebrate the International Women’s Day on the 8 March, the EUFF will also add a free screening of a documentary film ‘#Female Pleasure’, followed by a panel of experts on women’s rights, which includes the cinematographer, Anne Misselwitz, and a reception.

At the beginning of every screening, the EUFF will show ‘EU Through the Hong Kong Looking Glass’, an amusing short film produced by students of the Buddhist Chung Wah Kornhill Primary School, as part of the Filmit 2018 competition organised by the Education Bureau.
