There are some problems involved with youth employment in Armenia. To address this issue, it is essential to support the youth in career orientation and professional training which requires refreshing of the vocational training institutions, particularly in the regions. On the other hand, it is essential to have the non-formal education and the attention of potential employers towards young professionals. The project is aimed at establishing contacts between the interested parties and expand the capacity of the youth in the employment market.

“Young people in Armenia have problem in career and professional orientation. Nowadays educational institutions provide knowledge in such professions which are not competitive in the labour market,” Lilit Chitchyan, rights advocate in the Save the Children International Armenia office says. However, The project is not confined to the youth only. “Our beneficiaries are the youth, but not only them. Our circle of beneficiaries also includes business employers, vocational education institutions, etc. We have a systemic the approach towards the problem targeting at multiple groups and institutions,” Lilit notes, adding that youth-oriented public policy so far have yielded any tangible results in terms of discovering new career opportunities. “The youth participation in the community development projects is close to zero, so they are unable to get their issues reflected in the development projects and so that the needed resources can be identified,” Lilit elaborates adding, “Many other youth-related issues are still unresolved, and we are going to take efforts to have the attitude improved.” However the situation is not that gloomy, as it might seem initially. On the contrary, it is more hope-inspiring, Lilit says pointing out that managers in many vocational schools have a clear vision of how their institutors could be helpful in meeting their community’s needs.
Save the Children International Armenia’s regional manager Arsen Simonyan also underlines the importance of non-formal education and particularly the transferrable skills.
“We live in a world where every skill you have becomes outdated in the job market in five years. We want the youth to learn how to learn to find employment or keep their present job, and we want them to admit the concept of life-long learning to be a professional in every field,” Arsen continues, remarking with a touch of humour that soon he will require some training.
Not much time - only a few months has elapsed since the kickoff of the project, but Arsen has some ground for optimism. In 2018 they have held a youth opportunity fair which hosted more youth organizations than initially intended and the event itself was very interesting marked by relevant ideas and initiatives by its participants. Those will help the youth to make choices in their professional development aims and will venture into business.
Youth problems in Armenia are numerous, however tackling them while involving them indeed inspires hope that the closed doors in front of the youth will be reduced to bare minimum and their creative potential will find ample room for realisation.
