EU Support to Scale Up Maternal and New Born Child Health Outcomes for States in Northern Nigeria (EUMNCH)

The overall objective is to significantly improve the health status of women and children through an improved and sustainable primary health care delivery system.

Expected results:

  • Improved health seeking behaviour by women/children;
  • Increased access to health service for poor and marginalised rural women;
  • Improved health service delivery;
  • Improved nutritional status of women/children;
  • Improved health system governance. 


Main activities include:

  • Built capacity of 40 health facilities to provide Basic Emergency Obstetric Care services;
  • Built capacity of 4000 community health workers and 400 community health extension workers;
  • Supported government to conduct mapping of existing health financing schemes;
  • Supported the scale up phase of the community health insurance scheme;
  • 20 health facilities upgraded as centres of excellence currently providing Emergency Obstetric Care;
  • 451 ward focal facilities were supported with medical equipment, drugs and supplies;
  • 21 LGA management committees revitalised and supported to hold monthly meetings;
  • Capacity of 1,500 health workers built to provide integrated nutrition services at facility level;
  • Strengthened the periodic PHC reviews to improve local planning and monitoring;
  • Supported the development of the State Strategic Health Development Plan (2016-2020). 


  • Project ended 29 April 2017;
  • Final narrative and financial reports received Q4, 2017 but with some gaps requiring additional info. 


Next Steps:   

  • A Joint PSC under the successor EU-MNCHN+ project is planned for Q3 2018 in Abuja;
  • UNICEF to provide report on joint learning/lessons learned (at outcome level) by Q4 2018;
  • Ongoing preparation for dissemination of project achievements with appropriate EU visibility;
  • Processing final tranche is pending receipt of additional information from final reports.
