A significant moment of P.Burian's visit was a meeting with the Deputy Prime Minister - Minister of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan M. Tleuberdi. The parties discussed a wide range of issues, including strategic partnership, implementation of EU programmes in Kazakhstan and region, stability and security in the Central Asian region, ongoing reforms in various areas of legal and economic development of the country.
On behalf of the President of Kazakhstan Kassym-Jomart Tokayev, Ambassador Peter Burian was awarded the Dostyk Order of the II degree for his contribution to the development and implementation of strategic projects of the EU for cooperation with Kazakhstan and Central Asia.
During the meeting with the head of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of the RK M.Tleuberdi, Ambassador P.Burian was acquainted with political, social and economic reforms. Parties have discussed the situation in the country related to the pandemic caused by Covid-19. The Special Representative spoke positively about Kazakhstan's own vaccine and the work on issuing "vaccine" passports.
It is important to note the meeting of Ambassador Burian with the special representative of the President of Kazakhstan for international cooperation E. Kazykhan, in which the parties discussed the main areas of cooperation in the trade, economic and investment areas, as well as the problems of climate change and the potential for the development of renewable energy sources.
A number of meetings were held with the country's parliamentarians, in particular in the Senate of the Parliament with the Chairman of the Committee on International Relations, Defense and Security M. Kul-Mukhamed, Deputy of the Senate D. Nurzhigit, in the Majlis with the Chairman of the Committee on International Affairs, Defense and Security A.Kuspan, Deputies of the Majlis E. Abakanov and Y.Kuchinskaya. The parties discussed issues of improving inter-parliamentary relations between the EU and Kazakhstan, as well as legislative and legal reforms in various areas of socio-economic development.
The conversations with international organizations represented in Kazakhstan were vital, in particular with the M.Friberg-Storey, United Nations Resident Coordinator Office Team Leader, H.F. Schodder, UNHCR Representative for Central Asia, A.Preimanis, EBRD Director in Kazakhstan, and V. Frobarth, Head of the OSCE Program Office in Kazakhstan.
In addition, meetings with members of the diplomatic community, Embassies of foreign countries including US and UK, missions of EU Member States were held during this visit.
Ambassador Burian also met with the Ombudswoman, Commissioner for Human Rights of the Republic of Kazakhstan E.Azimova. During the conversation, parties discussed reforms in the field of observance of human rights and the implementation of the rule of law, in particular, issues related to the new law on the activities of the Ombudsman.
Along with the aforementioned dialogues with high-ranking representatives of the state and legislative bodies, the negotiations within the framework of the 7th meeting of the High-level Dialogue Platform on Economic and Business Issues Kazakhstan-EU (Business Platform) were notable. The Business Platform held under chair of Prime Minister of the RK A.Mamin. Along with the special representative, business representatives and heads of EU diplomatic missions led by the EU Ambassador to Kazakhstan Sven-Olov Carlsson attended the event. It is important to note that the Business Platform complements the technical dialogue between the EU and Kazakhstan under the Enhanced Partnership and Cooperation Agreement.
Within the framework of the visit, it was also significant to hold a briefing with the heads of the country's prominent media structures, in particular with the Chairman of the Board of Khabar Agency E.Bekhozhin, General Director of the Kazinform International Information Agency A.Umarov, and General Director of Atameken Business Media Holding K.Sakharia. Journalists of Azattyk Radio and Astana Times also attended the roundtable. Journalists asked questions related to regional security, visa-free regime between Kazakhstan and the EU countries. The problem of entry of vaccinated residents of the parties was raised as well, as current key topics such as the recent a resolution of the European Parliament, attraction of investments, improvement of economic development and cooperation in the field of innovation and high technologies, transfer of experience in climate change and energy transformation.
An important part of the trip was organising the meetings with representatives of public organizations such as the Kazakhstan International Bureau for Human Rights and Rule of Law, PF “AR. RUKH. HAK.”, PF “International Legal Initiative”, Center for Legal Policy Research, PF “Erkindik Kanaty”, Association of Religious Organizations of Kazakhstan, PF “Qadir-Kasiet”. During the meetings, the participants discussed issues of the implementation of legal reforms, shared their experience and results of the implementation of projects in the field of civil society development, including those financed by the EU.
In Almaty, P.Burian took part in the international round table "EU Strategy in Central Asia: Opportunities and Prospects", which was held in Al-Farabi KazNU, which was attended by Kazakh scientists and experts. Ambassador Burian emphasized the importance and necessity of further expanding the research potential of Kazakhstan and called on Kazakhstani universities to participate in European research programs.
