EU boosts Karene and Falaba District Councils with SLL 26 billion contribution.

The success of development lies with people-centered solutions adapted to the local context. That is why the European Union supports decentralisation within and outside its borders.

Today, we are pleased to announce the signing of two grants awarded to Karene District and Falaba District, valued 1 Million Euro (13 billion SLL) each. This EU contribution aims at empowering local governments and at implementing a decentralized approach to service delivery, in line with the Government of Sierra Leone's ambitions enshrined in its Medium Term National Development Plan 2019-2023.

Both grants are provided in the framework of the “EU programme in Support to Civil Society and Local Authorities for local development in Sierra Leone” funded under the European Development Fund. They will support institutional capacity building of the Councils, create investments to boost economic growth and increase revenue generation and effective service delivery at the local level.https://twitter.com/TomVensEU/status/1397820136933974017/photo/1

This support to the newly created district councils will also provide training for farmers and farming inputs and the construction of drying and storage facilities for improved agricultural production, food security and value chain development. The project will further rehabilitate feeder roads, construction of culverts and market stalls for improved accessibility of farmers and traders to market centres and last but least also foresees the construction and rehabilitation of boreholes and padlocks for improved access to potable water and life-stock management in a bid to address critical needs of the local population.

By doing so, the European Union hopes to contribute towards post COVID-19 socio-economic recovery and effective service delivery to the people of the two sister districts in Sierra Leone.
