On 8 March, Indonesia received a delivery of 1,113,600 doses of COVID-19 vaccines under the COVAX Facility. This delivery is part of a first wave of arrivals that will continue in the coming months.

The European Union (EU) and EU Member States – Team Europe – were co-initiators of COVAX and are its lead contributor.

“The Indonesian people received on 8 March a first quota of around 1 million doses under the COVAX Facility to cover the most urgent needs. More vaccines under COVAX will be arriving throughout 2021 and will support Indonesia in its fight against COVID 19. Team Europe – comprising the EU, its Member States and its financial institutions – is proud to be a lead contributor to the COVAX Facility with €2.2 billion (IDR 38 trillion) so far,” said EU Ambassador Vincent Piket. “COVAX is a success story of solidarity and multilateralism, of working together to solve the biggest global challenge we face,” added Ambassador Piket.

The EU had launched the “Team Europe” approach to support partner countries in the fight against the COVID-19 pandemic and its consequences. Team Europe’s €2.2 billion contribution to the COVAX Facility brings us close to achieving COVAX's target to purchase 2 billion doses, including at least 1.3 billion doses for 92 low and middle-income countries by the end of 2021. The COVAX Facility is the global initiative that is leading efforts to secure fair and equitable access to safe and effective COVID-19 vaccines in low and middle-income countries. To date, a total of 191 countries participate in the COVAX Facility.

In Indonesia, Team Europe has also mobilised around €200 million in grants and loans to support the country’s response to the COVID-19 crisis.
