OFFICIAL RULES

 

NOTE: The deadline for the UNity Photo and Art Competition passed on Friday 12th February and we are no longer accepting entries.  Winners will be announced at a special virtual awards ceremony on Thursday 25th February.

INTRODUCTION

The EU Delegation to Trinidad and Tobago will collaborate with the Photographers Guild to present, ‘UNity Photo and Art Competition'.     This competition is in keeping with the EU's objective to put cultural cooperation at the heart of relations with countries around the world.  In particular, through art and photography the EU seeking to promote intercultural dialogue and as well build understanding between societies.

The 2020-21 competition is being held in the context of the celebration of the 75th Anniversary of the United Nations Charter, which the EU supports. The EU and the UN have always worked hand in hand as partners for Human Rights, the rule of law, sustainable development, and the fight against climate change. The EU is also committed to preserving and strengthening multilateral relations with its partners across the globe, with the United Nations at its core.  The following themes, therefore, will be the focus of year’s competition:

THEMES

Unity in Diversity and Stronger Together.  These themes highlight the importance of celebrating not only what we share in common, but also our differences.  The cultural richness and beauty in the diversity of peoples and societies, are to be understood, respected and celebrated, alongside our common humanity – with the full knowledge that our common aspirations will be more easily realized if all peoples work together.

Build Back Better and the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs2030):  The ongoing COVID pandemic is evidence that global challenges are best handled together and the SDGs are the ideal roadmap to use we work our way towards a new normal.

Photographers and artists are invited to reflect on these themes and use them as inspiration for their pieces.

  ELIGIBILITY

The competition is open to nationals of Trinidad and Tobago.  Trustees, employees or partners of the EU institutions and the Photographers Guild, as well as immediate family (spouse, parents, siblings and children) and household members of those employees are not eligible to participate.

Submitted photos and artwork that are not related to the themes, or do not comply with the rules, will not be eligible.

DEFINITIONS

Amateur - For the purposes  of this  competition, 'amateur' is defined as any individual who does not make a living, full  time, as a photographer or artist.  Enthusiasts, photography/art students, and part-time freelance photographers/artists are eligible to participate.  The Organizers reserve the right to investigate the status of any participant to ensure they meet these eligibility requirements.

Professional – For the purposes of this competition, a professional photographer is one who makes a living 100% of the time as a photographer in practice or teaching.  For artists, those who work full time as artists in practice or teaching, and/or are recognized by the public or their peers as  such; have participated in exhibitions and received compensation from sale of their artwork; have received advanced training and education; hold  copyright and receive royalty payments; have a legitimate, fully licensed business related their art.

ORGANIZERS

This competition is organized by the European Union Delegation to Trinidad and Tobago, and the Photographers Guild of Trinidad and Tobago (‘the Organizers’).

ENTRY PERIOD

NOTE: THE DEADLINE FOR ENTRIES HAS BEEN EXTENDED TO FEBRUARY 12th, 2021 AT 11:59 PM.

The competition will begin on December 1st, 2020 and end at 11:59 pm on January 8, 2021.  Entries received after that time will not be eligible unless the Organizers officially announce an extension of the entry period.

HOW TO ENTER

Photos and artwork in all age categories can address any of the themes: Unity in Diversity, Stronger Together, Build Back Better, or any of the 17 SDGs

  1. Participants are required to submit original photos or works of art based on the themes 
  2. Art can be paint, crayon, pencil, mixed media, or digital
  3. Photos can be augmented/edited/touched up
  4. Both photos and artwork should include brief captions/reflections on the themes (maximum 250 characters)
  5. Full contact information – name, age, phone number and email address is to be included with each entry.
  6. Photos (hi-res, JPEG format) should be submitted via email to: Karen.sheppard@eeas.europa.eu.
  7. Artwork should be submitted via email (a hi-res digital image – JPEG format of the piece[1]). 
  8. The EU Delegation will confirm receipt of all entries.[2]
  9. Entries will be judged based on quality of the work, relevance to the theme and resonance of the message.

One entry per person.  Entries not following these guidelines will not be considered.

WINNERS

A panel of judges chosen by the Organizers will choose the winners.  The panel will include the EU Head of Delegation.  Winners will be determined based on the quality, creativity and originality of the photo/art and caption and relevance to the themes.

The Organizers will contact those shortlisted for prize consideration using the contact information on their post.  The shortlisted persons will then have 48 hours to contact the Organizers before an alternate is selected.  NOTE:  All shortlisted individuals will be required to provide their printed photo/art of size 81/2 X 11 or larger to the Organizers (for a photo exhibition of the works).   All finalist submissions must be exhibition-ready, that is, framed and/or mounted.

These prizes will be awarded at a special virtual ceremony to take place at the conclusion of the competition in January 2021. 

PHOTO/ART EXHIBITION

The Organizers intend to display for a period of one week after the award of prizes the photography and artwork works of competition finalists.  By consenting to participate in this competition and exhibition, participants will have conferred usage rights to the Organizers for the use of these works on display only, in future promotional activities.

GENERAL CONDITIONS

In the event that the operation, security, or administration of the Competition is impaired in any way, the Organizers may, in their discretion, either: (a) suspend the Competition to address the impairment and then resume it; or (b) award the prize(s) to one of the selected out of the eligible entries received up to the time of the impairment. The Organizers reserve the right, in their sole discretion, to disqualify any individual who tampers with the operation of the Competition, violates these Rules, or acts in a disruptive or unsportsmanlike manner. The Organizers' failure to enforce any term of these Rules shall not constitute a waiver of that provision. In the event of a dispute as to the owner of an online entry, the authorized account holder used to enter will be deemed the owner.

RELEASE AND LIMITATIONS OF LIABILITY

By entering, the participant agrees to release and will not hold the EU Delegation to Trinidad and Tobago, The Photographers Guild of Trinidad and Tobago, the Art Society of Trinidad and Tobago, and Facebook, their respective parent, subsidiaries, affiliates, and each of their respective officers, directors, employees, and agents (the “Released Parties”) responsible for and against any claim or cause of action arising out of participation in the Competition or receipt or use of any prize, including, but not limited to: (a) unauthorized human intervention in the Competition; (b) technical errors; (c) printing errors; (d) late or undelivered mail; and (e) errors in the administration of the Competition. The participant waives the right to claim any attorney’s fees and any damages whatsoever, including, but not limited to, punitive, consequential, direct, or indirect damages.

PRIVACY AND PUBLICITY

Any information the participant submits, when entering the Competition is provided to the Organizers, not to Facebook. Except where prohibited, the participant consents to the Organizer's use of the participant's name in any list of winners (if applicable) and for promotional purposes in any media without further payment or consideration.

DISPUTES

The participant agrees that any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of, or connected with, the Competition or any prize awarded shall be resolved individually, without resort to any form of class action, and exclusively by the appropriate court located Trinidad and Tobago. All issues and questions concerning the construction, validity, interpretation and enforceability of these Official Rules, the participant's rights and obligations, or the rights and obligations of the Organizers in connection with the Competition, shall be governed by, and construed in accordance with, the laws of Trinidad and Tobago, without giving effect to any choice of law or conflict of law rules (whether of Trinidad and Tobago or any other jurisdiction), which would cause the application of the laws of any jurisdiction other than Trinidad and Tobago.

ACCEPTANCE OF THE RULES

Participation in the competition implies full acceptance of the above rules.
