Lima- March 1st, 2019. - A European Parliament delegation has visited Peru on the 1 and 2 of March to look into the situation concerning the increasing flow of Venezuelan migrants in the country.
Headed by Luis de Grandes (EPP,ES), ten MEPs representing five EP political groups will visit Lima and Tumbes, a Peruvian city near the country’s border with Ecuador.
The delegation will meet with representatives of the Peruvian Ministry of Foreign Affairs and various organisations dealing with migration management, as well as members of the Foreign Affairs Committee of the Peruvian Congress.
In Tumbes, the delegation will visit the border and exchange views with local authorities and representatives of international organisations providing humanitarian assistance on the ground, such as IOM and ACNUR.
Prior to their visit to Peru, MEPs will take part in the Euro-Latin American Parliamentary Assembly (EuroLat) meeting scheduled for 28 February in Santa Cruz de la Sierra (Bolivia).
According to the International Organization for Migration (IOM), in the last years, over three million people have left Venezuela, sunk in a deep political, economic and humanitarian crisis.
Colombia host the greatest number of Venezuelans, around one million people, followed by Peru - in which the number of arrivals is growing the most in relative terms-, Ecuador, Argentina, Chile and Brazil.
Last year, a European Parliament delegation visited the Venezuelan borders with Colombia and Brazil to assess the humanitarian situation.
Last month, Juan Guaidó declared himself Venezuela’s interim President pursuant to Article 233 of the Venezuelan Constitution. EP recognised Guaidó's as legitimate interim President on 31 January and called on EU member states to do the same. Guaidó was promptly recognised as the legitimate President of Venezuela by a majority of member states and by many other countries, including the US, Colombia, Brazil, Chile and Canada.
