The European Union in Peru held the third edition of “Cafecito Con Europa”, a program that seeks to approach young people to the European Union in a space for debate, regarding current issues, locally and globally. The subject developed on this occasion was "Gender", in the framework of the celebration of International Women's Day in March.
The dialogue was led by Maria Ruuskanen, from the Embassy of Finland, who was accompanied by Wilson Hernández Breña, researcher at the University of Lima. The event received national and foreign university students, as well as leaders of civil organizations working to achieve equal rights between men and women.
"Gender" Situation in Peru and Challenges for the Future
Wilson Hernández Breña, author of the book "Gender in Peru", pointed the existence of two types of machismo: a benevolent one, which places women in a weak position and in need of protection, therefore she requires special attention for their condition; and a hostile one, which expresses severe aggressions against women focusing on the differences between both genders.
Maria Ruuskanen shared with the audience the historical process that Finland went through to become the country with more than 140 years of gender equality. She pointed that Finland was pioneer in the world establishing woman inclusive policies. She also mentioned how this work started in the late 1880s, when they began to show that the female gender has the same intellectual capacity as men.
Transgender representatives also participated on the debate, explaining the situation that they live in Peru and the actions that State and society should execute to achieve a tolerant nation.
