Representations of the European Union throughout the world (currently 141) are called Delegations of the European Union. The Delegation of Peru based in Lima was opened in March 1991. It officially represents the European Union in Peru and is also responsible for the relations with the Andean Community (link is external) (link is external), whose General Secretariat is also in the Peruvian capital.
The Delegation of the European Union in Peru benefits from diplomatic status similar to that of the countries accredited in this country and enjoys a regime of privileges and immunities, stipulated in an Agreement signed with the Peruvian Government in 1990.
The Delegation of the European Union in Peru is headed by the Head of the Delegation, who has the rank of Ambassador. Diego Mellado is Head of Delegation of the European Union in Peru since September 2017.
