On March 30th, a plane left Asunción to Frankfurt with approximately 340 European citizens who were stranded in Paraguay after commercial flights to Europe were cancelled and borders closed.

The repatriation operation was led by Germany with the EU's financial support under the European Union Civil Protection Mechanism. The EU Delegation to Paraguay coordinated with Member States' embassies in Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay, along with honorary consuls.

The 340 citizens were mostly from Germany, roughly 90 of them were from other 11 EU countries (we are still working on the exact numbers). The group included elderly, pregnant women and people with risk factors, along with a group of young students who were living with Paraguayan host families within a cultural exchange programme. Citizens expressed feelings of gratitude and relief of having the possibility to come back home in this moment of uncertainty.

The efforts were widely covered by media and shared in social media of member states, highlighting that this was possible thanks to coordination and solidarity among EU Member States.
