The European Union Election Observation Mission in The Gambia (EUEOM) received 16 more election observers on 04 November 2021. The long-term observers are coming from 15 different countries of the European Union and Norway. Each team has two members, a woman and a man, and all observers have experience in election observation from former missions. The mission is led by Norbert Neuser from Germany, Member of the European Parliament.

After arrival in Gambia´s capital Banjul on Thursday, the observers attend briefings for two days about the mission, the country and various aspects regarding the upcoming presidential elections scheduled for 04 December 2021. The role of long-term observers is to assess the campaign and preparations for the elections in all districts of Gambia. Long-term observers are fundamental for the mission’s conduct of a comprehensive assessment of the electoral process in line with the EU’s standard election observation methodology.

The European Union had deployed an Election Observation Mission on 27 October after an invitation of the Independent Electoral Commission of the Gambia. The Deputy Chief Observer and a team of 7 election experts and specialists arrived in the country. The group consists of election-, political-, legal-, data-, media- and social-media-analysts. The EU EOM is bound by a code of conduct that requires strict neutrality and non-interference.

The Mission operates under a separate and distinct mandate from that of the European Commission and other EU institutions in The Gambia. It undertakes its work following the Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation. EU EOM observers also adhere to all procedures and regulations set by the Gambia authorities related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
