On the occasion of the International Day against Homophobia, Transphobia and Biphobia, the European Union reiterates its unswerving commitment to promoting and protecting the rights of lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender and intersex (LGBTI) persons.
The Delegation of the European Union to Papua New Guinea offers two internships for a period of 5 months, which is expected to begin July 2019 through to the end of November 2019. This is the second year that this opportunity will be offered at the Delegation. The Programme is not exclusive to PNG but on offer at practically all of the other 140 European Union Delegations worldwide, with many young university graduates benefiting from this rich experience, including many Europeans, some of whom later became career EU officials. New graduates have a wonderful chance to transition from study to work through a unique multicultural work experience at a prominent EU diplomatic representation.
The EU Annual Report on Human Rights and Democracy in the World 2018 was adopted by the Foreign Affairs Council on 13 May, 2019. This report, prepared annually by the Foreign Affairs of the EU and with Member States provides an overview of EU activities to promote and protect human rights and democracy across the globe, including Papua New Guinea. In honour of the occasion the Delegation of the European Union to Papua New Guinea also shares with the public its Human Rights Country Update for 2018.
Last week, the Delegation of the European Union to Papua New Guinea held a successful European Union – Papua New Guinea Friendship Week from 5-9 May 2019. The week began at the Divine Word University on 5 May, culminating in the official Europe Day Reception on 9 May, the EU's official "national day".
At a time when human rights are challenged on a daily basis with many attempts to undermine the universality and indivisibility of human rights, the EU has remained at the forefront of the protection and promotion of human rights and democracy, be it in international forums, bilaterally with governments or through concrete support to the civil society.
