Presentation of credentials of the EU Head of Delegation to Panama

Following the agreement of the Commission and the Council of the European Union on the decision by High Representative for Foreign Affairs and Security Policy/Vice-President of the European Commission, Federica Mogherini, to upgrade the EU Office in Panama, Mr Chris Hoornaert, Head of the EU Delegation in Panama, presented his credentials on January 16, to the President of Panama, H.E. Juan Carlos Varela. The Establishment Agreement with Panama was signed on 15/11, in the margins of the Ibero-American Summit. This has taken the total number of EU Delegations around the world to 143. 

Both sides underlined the historic moment that the EU-Panama relations are undergoing with the opening of a fully-fledged EU Delegation in Panama. This  reflects the positive development of EU-Panama relations as well as the potential for future strengthened cooperation, taking into account Panama's role as a regional hub and in fields of common interest in trade, sustainable development, combating drugs trafficking, anti-money laundering and terrorism, and the global agenda. It is also an important step of further strengthening the EU's engagement in the region
