Visit by the European Investment Bank strengthens cooperation between the European Union and Panama on sustainable development.

The European Union has thus reaffirmed its strategic commitment to Panama through concrete initiatives aimed at promoting sustainable growth, climate resilience, and regional integration. In this context, Panama received a visit from the European Investment Bank (EIB) from 9 to 13 June, led by José Manuel Otero, Head of Public Sector Operations for Mexico and Central America, and Matteo Banti, Head of Cooperation for Panama and Costa Rica. The mission formed part of the European Union’s Global Gateway strategy, which seeks to strengthen long-term partnerships that promote sustainable development and global connectivity, in close collaboration with EU Member States and the private sector.
During their visit, the European delegation and Panamanian authorities conducted a technical assessment of priority sectors, including the energy transition, sustainable mobility, water infrastructure, and the decarbonisation of strategic value chains. Within this framework, opportunities were identified to accelerate the development of renewable energy, modernise electricity distribution networks, promote low-emission transport, expand access to clean drinking water, and uphold high environmental and social standards in the extraction of critical raw materials.
The European Investment Bank also underlined its particular interest in advancing regional energy integration through its involvement in electricity interconnection projects between Panama, Colombia, and Costa Rica. These initiatives contribute to building a safer, more sustainable, and more resilient energy market in Central America. In doing so, the European Union and its financial institutions have reaffirmed their commitment to working hand in hand with Panama to translate these objectives into concrete investments that deliver lasting benefits for the population.
We continue building bridges — both literally and figuratively — towards a greener, more connected future.
