Statement by the Spokesperson on Burundi
The Spokespersons for the HR/VP, Federica Mogherini, and for the Member of the Commission responsible for International Cooperation and Development, Neven Mimica, would make the following statement:
‘The decisions taken on the situation in Burundi at the African Union Summit, which has just ended in Johannesburg, constitute an essential road map for the country to emerge from the crisis. Only the search for a consensual political solution can break the deadlock in the country and safeguard security and democracy for all Burundians.
The European Union supports the call made by the African Union and the East African Community to revive the dialogue between all political stakeholders as soon as possible.
It is important that all stakeholders comply with the conditions set out in the call. The European Union is ready to mobilise all the necessary means and mechanisms provided for this purpose under the Cotonou Agreement.’
