The fundamental human rights to safe drinking water and sanitation apply to every human being and are fully recognised and backed by the EU in its diplomatic efforts and development policy.

EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah met with members of the Jerusalem Islamic Waqf Council. The diplomats were briefed about recent developments at the Haram al-Sharif/Temple Mount.

The EU is concerned about worrying developments and violent clashes at the Haram al-Sharif / Temple Mount. The EU reiterates the importance of upholding the Status Quo for the holy sites in Jerusalem, including with regard to Jordan's special role. Any unilateral attempt to change the Status Quo could have deeply destabilizing effects.

The European Union Representative issues the following statement in agreement with the EU Heads of Mission in Jerusalem and Ramallah.

The EU Missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah are very concerned about the arrests and violence used by Hamas security forces against protesters, including journalists, staff from the Independent Commission of Human Rights and human rights defenders, in Gaza over the past days.

Today, the EU Heads of Missions in Jerusalem and Ramallah visited Hebron. The diplomats met the Governor and representatives of Hebron city and its Chamber of Commerce. They also toured H2 area in the old city and visited a school there. 

The Heads of Missions started their visit at the Governor's Office. There, they were briefed by Hebron Governor Jibreen al-Bakri on the deteriorating situation in Hebron and the challenges the city and the Palestinian community are facing.

During the reporting period destruction and seizure of Palestinian property by the Israeli authorities in the occupied West Bank including East Jerusalem continued.

From July to December 2018 over 264 Palestinian owned structures were impacted by demolition, seizure, sealing off, or eviction. Almost one third of the incidents took place in East Jerusalem, with an increasing trend. As a result of the demolitions, 296 Palestinians including 146 children were displaced.

The European Union Representative, Ralph Tarraf, and Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees in the Near East (UNRWA), Pierre Krähenbühl, signed at UNRWA headquarters in East Jerusalem the EU-UNRWA contribution agreement in support of the Agency's 2019 Programme Budget.
