The 8th Sanitary and phyto-sanitary (SPS) Committee meeting under the EU-Korea FTA took place on 4 September at the Sejong governmental city in Korea, followed by a back-to-back workshop on the African Swine Fever (ASF) disease. The meeting was co-chaired by the Commission (DG SANTE and TRADE) and by Korea (Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs, Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, Animal and Plant Quarantine Agency), in presence of 13 EU Member States. The ASF workshop was also a success with 45 government officials attending from both sides including the EU Member States. The EU presented the situation of the outbreak in the EU Member States and three EU Member States ASF specialists (Belgium, Czech Republic and Italy) shared their experiences and the successful eradication cases in the second day, which was appreciated by the Korean government. The event strengthened the mutual understanding to better establish preventive measures against the disease. The next SPS Committee meeting will be held in Brussels in 2020.
