EU-organized EuroVillage introduces European culture, music, art and food to thousands in Islamabad

EU Delegation to Pakistan resumed its dazzling annual EuroVillage event after a lapse of three years in Islamabad on 29 October. The programme arranged by the EU Delegation in collaboration with EU Member States attracted more than 10,000 visitors from all walks of life including students, families, civil society members, diplomatic community and parliamentarians. The popular event immensely helped introduce European culture, art, music, food and the development work done by the EU and its Member States to the local audience in Pakistan.

To symbolize the bilateral partnership in a unique way, a special EU-Pakistan friendship truck was displayed for the first time at the event. The truck will be travelling all around the country to reach Pakistani youth in various universities and offer a window into the strong connection between the EU and Pakistan. A video message for the event by EU Ambassador Dr Riina Kionka recorded with the specially designed EU-Pakistan friendship truck received immense appreciation from within Pakistan and abroad.

EU Ambassador Dr Riina Kionka in her welcome remarks at the event expressed that “We cherish the diverse cultures, languages, religions, histories and identities that coexist in Europe. They are part of our wealth, they shape our shared values, connect us and give us a joint sense of purpose. It is this common understanding of shared values and diversity that lies at the heart of our relations with the world – including with Pakistan.”

Dr Kionka further added, “This edition of the EuroVillage is special because this year the European Union and Pakistan celebrate 60 years of diplomatic relations. This partnership in development, trade and political engagement, manifests that we are stronger together. Our partnership has evolved over the decades, as have Pakistan, the European Union and the world.”

Engineer Amir Muqam, Advisor to the Prime Minister on National Heritage and Culture Division attended as the event as the Chief Guest of the ceremony representing the Government of Pakistan. Advisor Amir Muqam congratulated the EU and Pakistan Government on completing 60 years of strong bilateral ties and expressed his sincere wishes for their advancement. Advisor Amir Muqam fully appreciated and acknowledged EU’s contribution in development cooperation with Pakistan ranging from political and strategic engagement, education, human rights and trade enhancement under the GSP+ programme.

The Diplomatic Missions of EU MS in Pakistan including Austria, Belgium, Bulgaria, the Czech Republic, Denmark, France, Germany, Hungary, the Netherlands, Poland, Romania and Sweden joined hands with the EUD Pakistan in organizing the EuroVillage. It included information and activity booths for both adults and children with interactive games, selfie corners, food and an opportunity to meet the diplomatic team and learn about areas of partnership.

The event also featured live performances by European performers and Pakistani artists including Asim Azhar and Shae Gill, appreciated immensely by the youth of Pakistan.
