Chile: Statement by the High Representative/Vice-President Borrell on the holding of a constitutional referendum

26.10.2020
Brussels

The European Union congratulates the Chilean people on participating massively in the referendum for a new Constitution despite the difficult circumstances of the COVID-19 pandemic. This participation is a democratic response to the demands expressed by the citizens over the last year and it sends a clear message in favour of peaceful change.

The Chilean people have expressed a clear choice to start the process of drafting a new Constitution by an elected Constitutional Assembly with gender parity guaranteed. This historical step is a unique opportunity to foster unity amongst all Chileans, to enhance the dialogue about the future of the country and to promote a more sustainable, equitable, cohesive and inclusive development.

As a long-standing partner, the European Union stands by Chile in the path chosen yesterday by its people.
