The mission of the Delegation of the European Union (EU) to the Republic of Serbia is to ensure the proper representation of the EU in Serbia, promoting and defending the values and interests of the EU and its Member States, and monitoring and supporting Serbia’s accession, including through successful implementation of EU assistance programmes.

Since December 2009 and under the Lisbon Treaty, the Delegation’s name is Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia. Within this context it has also acquired a leading role with member states embassies particularly in the fields of EU competences, notably trade and external assistance.

The role of the Delegation in Serbia is to:

  • Ensure representation of the European Union in Serbia;
  • Provide follow-up of bilateral relations in the areas of political, economic, trade and external assistance cooperation (financial and technical);
  • Pursue EU policies in all sectors;
  • Promote and defend the values and interests of the European Union;
  • Coordinate with Member States with the aim to follow up and foster the implementation of the Process of Stabilization and Association;
  • Report back to Headquarters on all matters of interest for EU policies;
  • Maintain and increase visibility, awareness and understanding of the EU;
  • Ensure long-term programming of aid and management of programmes and devolved projects within the framework of the current reform of external aid management (IPA funds).

H.E. Mr. Sem Fabrizi
Ambassador and Head of Delegation of the European Union to the Republic of Serbia

Sem Fabrizi has been Ambassador of the European Union to Serbia since July 2017.

From September 2013 to June 2017 he was Ambassador of the EU to Australia.

An Italian career diplomat, he has served as an advisor on international relations to the President of the European Council in Brussels and to the Prime Minister of Italy in Rome.

His earlier postings included Geneva, at the Italian Permanent Mission to the WTO and UN, and the Italian Embassy in Beijing.

At the Ministry of Foreign Affairs in Rome he has held positions in the EU Department and the Secretary General’s Office.

He holds degrees in International Law and International Economy from “La Sapienza” University in Rome, and he has served as a lieutenant in the Italian Army.

Sem has been awarded the honour of Cavaliere Ufficiale dell’Ordine al Merito della Repubblica Italiana. 

He is married to Rebecca, and they have three children.
