The European Union Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS, in collaboration with the Embassies of Belgium and the Netherlands marked this year' s International Human Rights Day under the theme "Freedom of Expression" with songs and poetry on the 5th of December.

This year, Human Rights Day kicks off a year-long campaign to mark the upcoming 70th anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights, a milestone document. For our commemoration we chose Article 19 of the Universal Declaration, the one that talks about everyone's right to freedom of opinion and expression.

At the reception held on 5th December at the EU Delegation complex, Deputy Head of EU Delegation, Mr Richard Young noted that The EU is committed to promoting and protecting the freedom of opinion and expression worldwide and condemns the increasing level of intimidation and violence that journalists, media actors and other individuals face in many countries.

Song renditions  by musicians Keren Happuch and CEF serenaded the guests at the event, while spoken word artist, Bash Amuneni delivered a spoken word poetry on "Freedom Speaks". The guest speaker was Mr Dapo Olorunyomi, CEO Premium Times and Nduwhite Ndubushi Ahanonu, founder/curator of International Institute for Creative Development.

This reception was part of a series of other activities by partner countries which will culminate to  mark the Human Rights Day (December 10)  with the Human Rights Walk starting at the National Human Rights Commission in the morning on December 11.
