The European Union and its partners put together a well-attended event in Abuja on Wednesday - 03 May 2017 to mark the World Press Freedom Day 2017.
Ms. Pauline Torehall, the Head Politics, Press and Information Section, EU Delegation to Nigeria, said EU's leading role in championing press freedom worldwide is a recognition that freedom of opinion and expression constitutes an essential foundation on which core democratic values stand. She underlined the necessity of a free, pluralist and independent media to the promotion and protection of freedom of opinion and expression, and said it is for this reason that the EU has been active in supporting journalists and writers.
The event was organised in partnership with UNESCO, the Canadian High Commission in Nigeria, the Nigeria Union of Journalists and the Nigerian Press Council. The theme for this year is "Critical Minds for Critical Times: Media Role in Advancing Peaceful, Just and Inclusive Society".
