Dr Nicole Miller, EU Chargé D'Affaires

On May 9, Dr. Nicole Miller, Chargé d'Affaires of the Delegation of the European Union to the State of Eritrea, hosted a reception to celebrate Europe Day. Dr. Nicole delivered a speech to the distinguished guests mentioning the profound transformation going on in the Horn of Africa as we witness a new reality, a reality of peace, stability and economic integration in the region, of which Eritrea is at the core.

She pointed out the European Union's own historical experience of achieving peace and economic integration, and its steadfast support to regional developments. Consolidating peace and strengthening economic cooperation can only bring mutual benefit to all the countries of the Horn of Africa and to their people. An inclusive process initiated by the European Union, the World Bank and the African Development Bank together with the Countries in the Horn of Africa involved is expected to lead to a high level conference in July 2019 (one year after the signing of the historic peace agreement between Eritrea and Ethiopia in July 2018) on promoting economic integration in the Horn of Africa.

As a longstanding development partner of the African Continent, including Eritrea, the Africa - Europe Alliance for sustainable investment and jobs (signed by President Juncker in September 2018) proposes a paradigm shift for the relation between both continents. At the same time, and in the same spirit, the European Union is re-engaging with Eritrea on jointly agreed priority areas for development cooperation, including infrastructure, job creation, culture and economic governance.

Dr. Nicole Miller highlighted the recently agreed project to support the procurement of machinery and equipment for rehabilitating the main arterial roads between the Eritrean/Ethiopian border and the Port of Massawa. Through this project, the European Union is directly supporting the peace process as well as economic development in the country, thus also paving the way for further reforms.

The event was well attended by high level Eritrean Government Ministers, Ambassadors accredited to State of Eritrea, United Nations Representatives and EU partners.
