In the Executioner's Shadow

03.10.2019

Join us on Wednesday, October 10th at American University for the screening of "In the Executioner's Shadow", a documentary film offering "a penetrating look at the consequences of the death penalty through three powerful stories - the rare perspective of a former state executioner who comes within days of executing an innocent person; a Boston Marathon bombing victim who struggles to decide what justice really means; and the parents of a murder victim who choose to fight for the life of their daughter’s killer."

The event takes place on the occasion of the World and Europe Day against the Death Penalty and will feature the following speakers:

  • HE Stavros Lambrinidis, Ambassador of the European Union to the United States
  • Daniel Myers, Provost, American University
  • Jerry Givens, former executioner, Commonwealth of Virginia (1982-1999)
  • Vicki Shieber. mother of murder victim and criminal justice reform advocate
  • Diann Rust-Tierney, Executive Director, National Coalition to Abolish the Death Penalty

A reception will follow in the Kogod School of Business Student Lounge.

The European Union has a strong and unequivocal opposition to the death penalty at all times and in all circumstances. All EU Member States have abolished the death penalty. This has not prevented them from continuing to effectively fight the most serious crimes.
