High Representative/Vice-President Federica Mogherini met today in Brussels with Dr. Nasr al-Hariri, the general coordinator and head of the negotiating team of the Syrian Negotiation Commission (SNC), and his delegation.
The High Representative/Vice-President confirmed to the SNC the European Union's full and continued support to the UN-led mediation process, that the EU considers as the primary process to achieve an intra-Syrian political solution. Only a UN-brokered process mandated by the UN Security Council will be seen by the Syrian people as impartial, with the required international legitimacy.
Both recognized the need to urgently and rapidly advance towards a negotiated political transition in Syria, mediated by the UN in Geneva and based on the United Nations Security Council Resolution 2254. Mogherini recalled the EU has recently commended the SNC's constructive and united engagement in the last round of the Geneva talks. She underlined the importance to have an inclusive political process and transition able to shape Syria's future unity and reconciliation.
Following the death of Mr Mounir Darwish, a SNC member, Mogherini presented her sincere condolences to Mr Darwish’s family and his colleagues. Mr Darwish's dedication and engagement for Syria made him an indispensable actor in the intra-Syrian talks.
The High Representative/Vice-President also confirmed that the European Union will be ready to assist in the reconstruction of Syria when a comprehensive, genuine and inclusive political transition, negotiated by the Syrian parties in the conflict on the basis of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 and the Geneva Communique, is firmly on its way.
