Constitution Day Message 2020

19.09.2020
Kathmandu

Today is an historic day for Nepal, as the country celebrates Constitution Day. Following the historic peace agreement in 2006, and after two Constituent Assembly elections, Nepal promulgated its new Constitution in 2015, effectively launching a new era aiming for prosperity and peace, which was followed by free and fair elections in 2017. For the 3 tiers of government, people’s representatives were elected, taking the path towards federalism as mandated by the Constitution an important step further.

The EU and its Member States have been ardent supporters of Nepal in its path towards peace, prosperity  and stability, be it through support to the election processes or through its European Multiannual Support programme in 2014-2020, as well as additional bilateral support programmes by its Member states. The EU and its member states have significantly contributed to the welfare of the Nepali people in social and economic aspects. Not only in the current pandemic crisis, but beyond, they will continue to stand by Nepal.

As the constitution mandates: wealth and peace for all Nepalis will depend on enhancing the participatory democratic system, good governance, and the protection and realisation of human rights. For all of us, who adhere to the  Universal Declaration of Human Rights, these are common goals.
