The EU Delegation to Nepal is one of the 140 diplomatic missions that represent the EU across the globe. It aims to strengthen EU-Nepal relations by taking up the roles:
The European Commission which was present in Nepal since 1992 for technical cooperation was upgraded in 2002 to a Delegation with a diplomatic status similar to that of other diplomatic missions in Nepal. It underwent a name change and became the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal after the formation of European External Action Service on 26 July 2010.
The EU Delegation does not deal with tasks of a consular nature (like issuing visas or providing tourist information), which are dealt with by the EU Member State Embassies in Nepal and instead functions as an official channel of bilateral relations, be it political, development, economic or cultural.
The Nepal Delegation is a fully-fledged diplomatic mission and officially represents the EU in Nepal. It plays an essential part in its political, economic and commercial relations with the country and provides information on the policies and institutions of the EU.
The Delegation plays a crucial role in supervising the implementation of EU co-operation programmes in Nepal, a role that is steadily increasing following the deconcentration of co-operation activities from Headquarters to Delegations foreseen in the reform of the management of the EU's external assistance.
The Delegation works closely with the diplomatic missions of the EU countries, serving as a venue for meetings that involve the EU as a whole, acting as the contact point for joint cultural initiatives. The Head of the Delegation is formally accredited as the official representative of the EU to the Government of the Nepal and is referred to as Her Excellency, Ambassador and Head of the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal.
Welcome to the website of the Delegation of the European Union to Nepal. The website is intended as an important information-sharing portal to bring the European Union closer to the Nepalese public. It presents the European Union's objectives and activities in Nepal and our priorities for contributing to the country's development. Through our website we also inform Nepalese citizens on the most important news regarding developments in the European Union.
In its six decades of existence, the European Union has worked to promote economic prosperity, social inclusion and taken ahead the task of setting up democratic and accountable institutions both within and outside Europe. Working around shared principles of democracy, respect for liberties and human rights, the EU family and its 28 Member States is the world's largest donor of development and humanitarian assistance.
In Nepal, the European Union has been focussing mainly on three sectors: education, rural development, strengthening democracy and decentralisation. Following the devastating 2015 earthquakes reconstruction also became an important focus. Apart from these sectors, we are also active in areas as varied as the protection and promotion of human rights, food security, conservation of the environment, safe migration, assistance to ensure transparent and effective public finance management, energy and introducing sustainable production and consumption practices. We are also working with the Government of Nepal and local communities in disaster risk reduction and climate change adaptation and mitigation. It would be important to mention here that the EU has tripled its assistance to Nepal from € 120 million to € 360 million for the period 2014-2020.
The European Union will be working closely with Nepal to assist in its ongoing efforts to achieve the Sustainable Development Goals by 2030.
Irrespective of the areas in which we are working, be it together with the Government of Nepal or with civil society partners and the private sector, our aim is to contribute to improving the economic and social status of the most marginalised and vulnerable Nepalese citizens. We believe in a prosperous and democratic Nepal and plan to continue to reinforce our support for it in the coming years.
I invite you to visit our website frequently and hope it will help you to gain a better understanding of the European Union and its numerous activities in Nepal.
