Today, EU Ambassador to Namibia, H.E. Sinikka Antila handed over two grants, amounting to 1,17 Million Euros and funded under the EU’s bilateral cooperation programme “Enhancing Participatory Democracy in Namibia”. This programme largely aims at strengthening and enhancing the interaction between government, the parliament and civil society organisations (CSOs) – thereby contributing to an enabling environment for CSOs in Namibia. The beneficiaries thanked the EU for this support, saying it will strengthen participatory democracy and the role of CSOs as it will also facilitate an increased number of people being involved in policy-making at groass-root level. The representative from the Ministry of Environment, Forestry and Tourism informed the conference that the government has noted success in CBNRM and greatly values its partnerships with CSOs.  “We are facing great challenges with the current Covid-19 Pandemic and the effects of the drought, which has severely impacted income levels as there is currently no trophy hunting and very little income from tourism. We therefore ask the EU and other partners to support us and walk this path with us”  Mr Bennett Kahuure from the Environment ministry added.
