On 30 June, the "Community Media Focus on Elections Namibia 2019" Project Launch took place at College of the Arts, Katutura. The event was attended by representatives from the media, civil society, community radio station managers from various regions in Namibia and Development Partners.
With the upcoming Presidential and National Assembly elections slated for later this year in Namibia, the EU in collaboration with Deutsche Welle, the Hanns Seidel Foundation decided to assist the Namibia Community Broadcasters Network (NCBN) with community education on elections. As radio plays a pivotal role in Namibia to inform and educate audiences, especially in rural areas where many communities still do not have access to the internet, the EU decided to support community radio stations with the production of voter education materials and training. In this regard producers from 8 community radios are expected to produce researched, analysed and publication supported reports, fact-boxes and interviews as well as specific formats for social media, covering weekly topics. The producers are based in their localities across Namibia and will be expected to talk directly to their communities as electorates, their leaders and topic experts in their communities. Main outcomes of this Project include: 8 trained active community journalists; 8 community radio stations actively airing content weekly, 512 audio pieces produced and shared, 218 604 listeners in 12 towns and regions to be reached in rural and urban localities in Namibia and 3900 plus reaches on WhatsApp via NCBN and the six radio stations.
In her statement, Ms Lewis from the EU Delegation said: "The right to vote is one of our most important freedoms as individuals and in this respect access to accurate and quality information for voters cannot be overemphasized".
