Developing Namibian Mineral Potential and Strengthening Geoscientific Data
Namibia ranks as a top African country for attracting foreign direct investment (FDI) in the mining sector. However, despite its mineral wealth, the mining industry contributes only around 12.5% of Namibia’s GDP and employs just 2% of the national workforce. The government has prioritized expanding the sector’s capacity, improving local value addition, and strengthening domestic revenue mobilization.
This Twinning project is designed to enhance Namibia’s geoscientific capabilities by strengthening the Geological Survey of Namibia (GSN). It aims to improve the country’s ability to manage its mineral resources sustainably, increase geological data availability, and contribute to policy reforms that support economic diversification. The project aligns with Namibia’s 5th National Development Plan (NDP5), the Growth at Home Strategy, and the Mineral Beneficiation Strategy. It also directly supports the EU-Namibia Partnership on Sustainable Raw Materials Value Chains and Renewable Hydrogen, which was formalized through a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in 2022.
