Over the past three years, five universities from Namibia, Botswana, Zambia and Germany have joined forces to create structures for the development of technical know-how, to interlink relevant stakeholders and to foster the awareness and motivation to take sustainable actions for the development of renewable energy technologies on political level in the target countries. The major goal of the NEED Project was to establish a research network in the field of renewable energy technologies in Southern Africa. The EU contribution amounted to EUR 995,252.98 (European Development Fund - EDF Intra ACP).
At the final conference that started on the 25th of July, the main achievements of the NEED Project was presented to stakeholders and it was an occassion to celebrate the launching of NEED's long-term institutionalized structure, the 'NEED network'. At the conference, EU Head of Delegation in Namibia, Jana Hybaskova said: "I want to emphasize the importance of developing skills in the area of renewable energy technologies in order to realize the national development plans of countries in the region as well as to ensure production of clean energy from countries like Namibia for export".
