On the 18th of May 2017 the EU support of the NNFU was launched. This four year project aims to strengthen the NNFU by enhancing their capacity in areas such as sector coordination, lobbying, advocacy and service delivery. During the event held, EU Ambassador to Namibia, Jana Hybaskova handed over N$6,75 Million to NNFU president, Mr. Tobias Emvula. The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry and Meatco Chairperson was also present at the event.
"Agriculture has a big role to play in getting people out of poverty. Sustainable development is all about partnership, and this project is an example on how partnership can work, by strengthening NNFU's capacities, as a Union representing over 70% of the farmers in the country. I would like to thank the EU for this timely and welcomed project. This programme provides support to the entire nation and contributes towards poverty alleviation in the country" said The Permanent Secretary of the Ministry of Agriculture, Water and Forestry at the launching event.
The intervention is the result of extensive literature review, desk research and consultations with key stakeholders. The proposal is a direct response to the situation analyses of the state of the farmers' federation as detailed in the 2014 congress report, Namibia National Farmers Union (NNFU) 2016 National Council and NNFU 2016 Northern Communal Areas of Namibia Stakeholder Conference findings.
