The Global Gateway Strategy is the EU's positive offer of cooperation to our partner countries in support of their own strategic autonomy, aligning partner countries and EU interests by increasing high-quality geostrategic investments and promoting sustainable finance. The Global Gateway represents the European Union's effort to reduce the global investment gap and boost smart, clean and secure connections in the digital, energy and transport sectors, as well as to strengthen health, education and research systems. It provides sustainable investment opportunities to increase the prosperity and security of our global partners and Europe.
Global Gateway is a way to connect Europe and partners across the globe, based on trust , sustainability and mutual interest. Global Gateway projects are designed explicitly to be sustainable and of high quality and to bring clear added value to our partner countries and their citizens.
By investing in digital, energy, transport, health, education the EU is also contributing to achieve the SDGs and the Paris Agreement, both in partner countries and in Europe.
Furthermore, it does so by fully respecting and promoting international standards of labour protection and respecting human rights, as well as good governance and transparency.
Covering five main themes (digital, climate and energy, transport, health, and education and research) it is implemented through the Team Europe approach mobilising all EU institutions, EU Member States, their Development Finance Institutions and Export Credit Agencies, the European Investment Bank, the European Bank for Reconstruction and Development and the European private sector.
Across the world, Global Gateway aims to mobilise up to €300 billion in investments between 2021 and 2027 with a mix of grants, concessional loans and guarantees to de- risk private sector investments.
In Myanmar, following the military coup of 1 February 2021, all on-going and prospective investments were suspended. Some of our on-going programmes through support to civil society contribute to the overall priorities of the EU Global Gateway Strategy.
