Illegal logging destroys forests and livelihoods. The EU supports the government, private sector and civil society for a more sustainable forest management in Myanmar.

Forests are beautiful and life-giving. They produce oxygen and purify the air. Forests preserve soil and support 80% of the world’s biodiversity. More than 1.6 billion people all over the world depend on forests for food, medicine and livelihoods. Forests are crucial for mitigating climate change, but they are at risk of being destroyed by illegal logging and unsustainable forest management practices.

The European Union supports Myanmar's efforts to protect its tropical forests through the FLEGT (Forest Law Enforcement, Governance & Trade) Action Plan. This initiative aims to reduce illegal logging by strengthening sustainable and legal forest management, improving governance and promoting trade in legally produced timber.

The FLEGT process brings together government, private sector and civil society. By engaging all players, FLEGT wants to enhance dialogue, transparency, and ownership among them to ensure that forests are both protected and can contribute to poverty reduction and economic growth in Myanmar.

Visit the FLEGT website for more information.
