Statement by the Spokesperson on the attacks in Burkina Faso

07.11.2019

On Wednesday 6 November 2019, 37 people were killed in a terrorist attack in the eastern region of Burkina Faso. The European Union extends its condolences to the families of the victims and expresses its solidarity with the Burkinabe people, who are now being plunged into mourning on an almost daily basis by attacks targeting not only civilians and the defence and security forces, but also the symbols of State authority, as demonstrated by the murder of the mayor of the municipality of Djibo and his companions on 3 November 2019.

Those attacks are fuelling a spiral of violence which is resulting in a significant displacement of the population, undermining social cohesion and hindering development. The European Union reiterates its support for the government of Burkina Faso, which currently holds the G5 Sahel Presidency. The European Union, together with its Member States, remains more committed than ever not only to the authorities and people of Burkina Faso, but also to all the countries in the region, in order to respond in a coordinated manner to the current challenges of security, stability and development in the Sahel.
